I need a hug..
SZA, real name Solána Imani Rowe, has managed to put me all in my feelings with her debut album, ‘CTRL’ and I’ll be the first to declare it the REALEST female R&B album of 2017, but let me tell you why..
First off, SZA isn’t just any type of girl. Born in St. Louis and raised in New Jersey as an orthodox Muslim, SZA attended historic Columbia High School and dropped out of Delaware State to pursue music. Shortly after, she met Punch from Top Dawg Entertainment and the rest is history!
With a sweet and sultry, raspy-voiced SZA captures your attention in her first track, Supermodel, after mentioning the fact that she cheated on her ex-boyfriend with his homeboy while he was on vacation. Talk about adding truth to your music. I’m not sure how many women know what it’s like to cheat on your man, but we all know what it’s like to feel cheated on or at least have a friend who does.
SZA made love, sex and heartache her three main topics of CTRL. With great artists like Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott as features, CTRL offers so much more than music, but it offers reality for women across the world.
I don’t believe there’s one woman that can say they can’t relate to at least one song on CTRL. One of my personal faves is The Weekend, the sixth track on CTRL. In this track, SZA sings as if she’s speaking to a man she used to date, asking him why does he want her knowing he has a girlfriend. She goes on to say that this particular dude is every woman’s man in their mind.
My man is my man is your man
Heard that’s her man
Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
I just keep him satisfied through the weekend
